PEMRA Fines Hum TV Rs. 1 Million for Indecent Scenes in Dram
Hum TV has been fined Rs. 1 million by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) for showing offensive scenes in a drama serial. On 29th January 2017, HUM TV broadcasted the episode named “Chew Gum” in drama serial “ Kitni Girhein Baqi Hein”. But several complaints were received from public about this episode after which PEMRA took notice about the situation.
Show Cause Notice
After receiving lots of complaints about this episode, PEMRA issued a show cause notice to Hum TV (M/s Eye Television Network) on February 20, 2017.
Case Hearing
Hum TV was given 7 days to reply the show cause notice. They sent the reply on 23rd February 2017. On 14th March, the representatives of the channel were heard by a personal hearing committee who also analyzed their previous reply. After reviewing the offensive clips of the drama, it was unanimously decided that the scenes were violation of Clauses 12, 17, 3 (1) (a) and 3 91) (e) of Electronic Media Code of Conduct 2015.
Punishment
Rs. 1 million fine was imposed on Hum TV due to violation of the previously mentioned clauses and the fine has to be paid within 3 weeks after this decision. PEMRA also directed the channel to be cautious about selecting topic of its dramas while they must keep the values and culture of Pakistan in front before taking any such decision as it may violate Electronic Media Code of Conduct 2015.
Apart from that, PEMRA also ordered Hum TV to establish an in house committee and inform the details of this committee within 3 weeks to PEMRA.
Previous Bans
Due to objectionable content and hate speech, programs from Geo News and Bol News respectively were banned by PEMRA previously. These programs were “Geo Pakistan” and “Aisay Nahi Chalay Ga” while Amir Liaquat of the latter program was also ordered to apologize due to his hate speech.
