Pemra Warning to Channels
The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA)recently issued a warning notice to three local channels for airing ‘indecent content’. PEMRA also mentioned that they will take action if these 3 channels violated the law again. The channels include:
1. Geo Entertainment
2. ARY Communications,
3. HUM TV.
Separate warnings are issued to these TV channels and PEMRA directed them to act according to the terms and conditions of their licenses. PEMRA also stated that socio-cultural norms should be respected by these TV channels and they can avoid these violations in future by appointing effective in-house editorial committees.
Details about the objectionable content are not provided but the governing body has provided few events that violated the rules and regulations of PEMRA.
Geo Entertainment
Indecent content was aired in a drama serial that aired on 7th August 2017. According to the authority, this was not only against the socio cultural norms and values but also breaking the provisions of the Electronic Media Code of Conduct in 2015. A PEMRA official told in anonymity that “Khaali Haath” was the name of that drama serial.
ARY Communication
The reason for giving notice to ARY was due to the airing of indecent content on HBO Pakistan as ARY has the landing rights of the channel in Pakistan. That objectionable content was released on April 10, 2017.
Hum TV
In the end, the warning was also given to Hum TV for the content of a drama serial that aired on the TV channel on 21st May 2017. PEMRA officially announced that the program was “Kitni Girhain Baaki Hain”.
